A Potential Return to MMA for Matt Riddle in 2024
Former UFC fighter and current professional wrestling star Matt Riddle has hinted at a possible return to mixed martial arts (MMA) competition in 2024. At 37, Riddle's athletic career has been diverse and controversial, encompassing significant achievements and setbacks in both MMA and professional wrestling.
Despite being tight-lipped about specifics, Riddle has confirmed ongoing discussions with several fighting organizations. The Wrestling Observer Newsletter has sparked speculation by reporting potential offers from the bare-knuckle fighting scene and the Professional Fighters League (PFL), suggesting a broad spectrum of interest in Riddle's combat sports future.
Riddle's MMA History
Riddle's tenure in the UFC ended on a high note in 2013 after he secured a victory over Che Mills, marking his fourth consecutive win in the promotion. However, two of these victories were later nullified due to positive marijuana tests. His final MMA bout took place in February 2014, where he triumphed over Michael Kuiper at a Titan FC event.
His departure from the UFC was not without drama, as UFC President Dana White publicly criticized him. Despite this, Riddle acknowledges that White's comments inadvertently boosted his profile and helped shape his "bro" persona, which has become a staple of his wrestling character.
Transition to Professional Wrestling
After leaving MMA, Riddle transitioned to professional wrestling, beginning his training in 2014 and making his debut in 2015. He quickly made a name for himself on the independent circuit, capturing several titles and building a reputation for his charisma and athleticism.
In 2018, Riddle's career took a significant leap forward when he signed with WWE NXT. There, he achieved success by winning the NXT Tag Team Championship alongside Pete Dunne. His momentum continued as he ascended to WWE's main roster, securing the United States Championship in February 2021.
Perhaps one of Riddle's most notable achievements in professional wrestling is forming the tag team "RK-Bro" with veteran superstar Randy Orton. Together, they have twice claimed the Raw Tag Team Championship, showcasing Riddle's ability to adapt and excel in various facets of sports entertainment.
Maintaining Combat Readiness
Despite his wrestling commitments, Riddle has maintained his combat sports edge by practicing martial arts multiple times a week. A Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt, Riddle's dedication to staying fight-ready fuels speculation about his return to MMA.
Recently spotted at the Jake Paul vs. Andre August boxing match in Orlando, Riddle's presence at combat sports events keeps him connected to the fighting community and fans' imaginations about his potential return to the ring or cage.
Riddle's Own Words
Speaking to MMA Junkie, Riddle expressed a mix of nostalgia and ambition regarding his fighting career. "There's been a lot of talk. I've been talking to a couple of promotions," he said. "I don't want to get into it until it's official, but I think in 2024 there's a very big possibility that I get back in the ring or cage pretty soon."
Reflecting on his past and how it shaped his current persona, Riddle acknowledged the impact of his UFC exit and Dana White's criticism. "I have to thank Dana because if he were to just fire me and not say anything, nobody probably would've known about me," Riddle remarked. "Putting me on blast and doing that, I think a lot of people could relate with me. They probably had their parents or their boss talk to them like that. I think that's kind of where that 'bro' character kind of started."
Despite the acrimonious split with the UFC, Riddle holds no grudges, keeping an open mind about his future endeavors. "I never say never," he stated. "If the opportunity is right. I don't really hold a grudge."
Riddle's competitive spirit remains undimmed as he contemplates his future in combat sports. "I feel like I left the UFC on a four-fight win streak, then won another fight in Titan FC. I just kind of left and went to pro wrestling," he explained. "I did good [and am] still doing it. Pro wrestling is awesome, but I still want to get beat up. I want to have my exit. We'll see. Maybe somebody beats me up. Maybe I keep winning. Who knows?"
As Riddle currently stands as a free agent, the world watches with keen interest to see whether this multifac
