Jessica Campbell Makes History as First Full-Time Female Coach in NHL with Seattle Kraken

The Seattle Kraken have made a historic addition to their coaching staff, appointing Jessica Campbell as a full-time coach. This move marks a significant milestone, as Campbell becomes the first woman in NHL history to assume such a role.

A Trailblazing Career

Jessica Campbell's journey to the NHL has been nothing short of extraordinary. Before this landmark appointment, Campbell served as an assistant coach with the Coachella Valley Firebirds. During her tenure, she managed the Firebirds' power play, showcasing her strategic acumen and leadership qualities.

Her coaching career is filled with numerous firsts. In 2022, Campbell shattered another glass ceiling by becoming the first woman to coach in the American Hockey League (AHL). She made headlines once again by managing Team Germany's men's national team during the 2022 IIHF Men’s World Championship, a feat that cemented her reputation as a trailblazer in the sport.

Proven Player Development

Campbell's ability to nurture and develop young talent has been widely recognized. Under her guidance, Tye Kartye won the 2023 AHL Dudley "Red" Garrett Award, given to the league's most outstanding rookie. Kartye thrived under Campbell's coaching, scoring 20 points (11 goals, nine assists) over 77 games for the Seattle Kraken.

Kraken head coach Dan Bylsma underscored Campbell's impact on player development, highlighting her work with Kartye, Shane Wright, and Ryker Evans. “During our tenure in Coachella Valley, I saw firsthand Jessica's commitment to player development. Her ability to establish relationships with her players, specifically Tye Kartye, Shane Wright, and Ryker Evans, was an important factor in this hire. I'm looking forward to continuing to work with her at the NHL level,” Bylsma remarked.

Leadership and Resilience

Campbell's leadership skills were evident early in her career. During the 2014-15 season, she captained the first-ever CWHL All-Star Game, setting the stage for her future coaching roles. Her experience as a leader both on and off the ice has proven invaluable as she transitioned into coaching.

Reflecting on her journey, Campbell shared her philosophy on coaching and personal growth. “For me, that's what it's about. Just putting my head down and doing the work. You know, where it takes me it takes me, but I'm obviously honored to be on this path and continue to just do the good work that it takes to hopefully reach that goal,” she said.

Invitation to Lead at the Highest Level

Jessica Campbell’s appointment to the Kraken is not just a personal achievement but a significant step forward for women in hockey. Her new role will likely include overseeing the Kraken’s power play, a testament to her strategic mind and deep understanding of the game.

“I just focused on the task at hand in coaching, but absolutely, it's obviously a tremendous opportunity, and I'm honored to be where I am and to be -- it's a humbling feeling to be a part of the Kraken organization,” Campbell expressed.

Beyond her pioneering role in coaching, Campbell has also contributed as a power-skating coach for elite athletes, including Natalie Spooner and Joel Edmundson. These experiences have honed her technical skills, making her an even more valuable asset to the Kraken.

Looking Ahead

With Campbell now part of the Kraken's coaching staff, the NHL takes a definitive step toward greater inclusivity and diversity. Her appointment shows that the league is ready to embrace the changing dynamics of modern hockey coaching, where talent and dedication are the true measures of success.

Jessica Campbell's impressive journey and numerous accolades are inspiring to many, and her new role with the Kraken signals a promising era ahead. As she put it, “I'm a big believer in just keeping a growth mindset every day. Obviously, my goal is to continue to coach at the highest level, but timelines aren't necessary for me and definitely not where my focus is.”

As Campbell joins the Seattle Kraken, she carries with her the hope and expectation of many, standing as proof that breaking barriers is possible with determination, skill, and relentless effort.
