Washington Commanders President Jason Wright to Transition Role After 2024 Season

In a significant development for the Washington Commanders, Jason Wright, the team’s current president, has announced he will transition from his role following the 2024 season and assume a new position as a senior adviser. Wright's primary mission in his advisory capacity will be to ensure the successful completion of the Commanders' new stadium deal.

Wright has been with the Commanders since 2020, a period that saw the franchise undergo substantial changes. When he took the helm, the team was known as the Washington Football Team. Under his leadership, the organization rebranded to the Washington Commanders in 2022, a move aimed at revitalizing its image and reconnecting with fans.

A Historic Tenure

Wright's leadership has been marked by a series of noteworthy accomplishments. He holds the distinction of being the first Black president of an NFL team, and only the fourth former player to take on the role of president within the league. His tenure also coincided with a significant change in ownership, as the Commanders transitioned from the leadership of Dan Snyder to Josh Harris.

"I am incredibly proud of what we have accomplished over the past four years," Wright said. "Together with an amazing team of professionals, we have taken this franchise through a period of immense challenge and uncertainty and have transformed it. We've set the table for an incredibly bright future under Josh's leadership."

Achievements and Forward Momentum

Wright’s tenure has been defined by efforts to engage and expand the fanbase, enhance the overall fan experience, and build stronger ties with corporate partners and the local community. "Over just the past year, we've welcomed record numbers of fans back into our building, made meaningful improvements to the fan experience, re-engaged with corporate partners, and reconnected with the community," Wright noted. "Most importantly, we re-established a culture of respect in this organization."

As he prepares to step into his new role, Wright emphasized the importance of guiding the Commanders through the completion of the much-anticipated new stadium deal. "Given all those accomplishments, that's why I am proud to announce I will remain with the team throughout the 2024-2025 season, with the same responsibilities. In particular, I look forward to helping the organization complete its new stadium deal," he revealed.

A Look to the Future

While Wright prepares for a smooth transition, he remains a strong contender for other prestigious positions within the NFL, including being a finalist for the role of president with the Green Bay Packers. His departure from the Commanders marks the end of a transformative era for the franchise and a potential new chapter in his professional career.

"This feels like the right moment for me to explore my next leadership opportunity," Wright expressed. "I'm extremely grateful to my Commanders colleagues, our fans, and this community for all that we have accomplished these past four years, and am looking forward to the start of a very successful season for the Burgundy and Gold."

Wright's legacy with the Commanders is cemented by the advances the team has made under his stewardship. As he moves into his advisory role, the foundation he has laid is expected to propel the franchise toward sustained success and growth under the leadership of Josh Harris and the next generation of executives.
