Haliburton hails from Oshkosh, Wisconsin, where his basketball journey began. As a high school freshman, he experienced a significant setback when he was essentially let go from the Playground Warriors AAU team. Reflecting on that time, Haliburton said, "They never said that I was cut, but my parents told me that it was essentially like, 'He can come if he wants to.'" This ambiguous dismissal was a bitter pill to swallow for the young athlete, who confessed, “I left in tears because I was so embarrassed of what was going on.”
Joining Wisconsin United
Undeterred, Haliburton’s journey took a three-hour round trip to join Wisconsin United, a Milwaukee-based team. This dedication not only showcased his commitment but also placed him under the tutelage of coach Bryan Johnikin. Coach Johnikin, recognizing Haliburton’s unconventional shooting style, once used his three-year-old grandson as a defender during practice to underscore the low release point of the young man's shot. Despite this unique method, the distinctive shot has become Haliburton’s trademark.
Unorthodox But Effective
Haliburton's shooting mechanics might not follow the textbook, but they have proved undeniably effective. His signature shot, starting from the chest and releasing in a catapult-like motion, often results in significant sidespin. Yet, his exceptional accuracy is hard to argue against. "To the average fan, or anybody who plays, obviously it isn't textbook. But there's no denying how effective it is. It's straight cash, is the best way I can put it," said Pacers guard TJ McConnell, extolling Haliburton’s shooting prowess.

Over his six seasons between Iowa State and the NBA, Haliburton has consistently shot above 40% from behind the arc, with just one exception. This dip in performance occurred last season when he rushed back from a hamstring injury.
