Frank Selvy, a basketball legend revered for his extraordinary scoring prowess and illustrious career, passed away on Tuesday at the age of 91. Selvy's family announced that he died peacefully at his home in Simpsonville. The Furman athletic department has confirmed this saddening news.

A Historic Achievement

Selvy remains a monumental figure in NCAA history, holding the record for the highest points scored in a single game. This historic feat was accomplished on February 13, 1954, during a remarkable 145-95 triumph over Newberry in Greenville, where Selvy scored an astonishing 100 points. In that unforgettable game, he made 41 field goals and 18 free throws, setting a benchmark in NCAA Division I basketball that still stands today.

Early Life and Collegiate Career

Born in Corbin, Kentucky, Selvy’s basketball journey truly began to flourish during his collegiate career at Furman University. From 1952 to 1954, Selvy dominated the NCAA scoring charts, leading the nation twice in points per game. As a senior, he boasted an impressive average of 41.7 points per game. Over his college career, he scored 40 points or more in 22 of his 78 games, a testament to his consistent scoring ability. Selvy's outstanding performances earned him Southern Conference player of the year honors for the 1952-53 and 1953-54 seasons, as well as being a three-time All-America selection.

Professional Success

Selvy's talent did not go unnoticed at the professional level. In 1954, he was selected as the No. 1 overall draft pick by the Baltimore Bullets. His NBA career spanned nine years, during which he played for five different franchises and became a two-time All-Star. Notably, Selvy spent his last four and a half NBA seasons with the Lakers, witnessing and contributing to the franchise’s transition from Minneapolis to Los Angeles in 1960.

Returning to His Roots

After his NBA career, Selvy returned to Furman University, transitioning from player to coach. He led the Furman basketball team for four seasons, contributing his vast knowledge and experience to his alma mater. Current Furman Vice President of Intercollegiate Athletics, Jason Donnelly, acknowledged Selvy’s legacy by calling him “Furman's all-time greatest athlete.”
