Golden State Warriors 2023-24 NBA Season Preview

The Golden State Warriors head into the 2023-24 NBA season with significant questions surrounding their starting lineup. Head coach Steve Kerr is tasked with the challenge of establishing a consistent unit, especially in light of the frequent lineup changes from last season, where the Warriors used 27 different starting lineups.

Uncertainty in Key Positions

A major area of intrigue revolves around the shooting guard position, previously held by Klay Thompson. Brandin Podziemski, De'Anthony Melton, and Buddy Hield are vying for the crucial 2-guard spot. Kerr acknowledges the complexity of this decision, stating, "There is competition across the board. It's not as simple as, 'Who is going to be the 2?' It's got to be -- 'Who is going to be the 5? Who's the 4?' We know that Steph is the 1. But what's the combination?"

The battle for the center position also adds to the Warriors' intrigue. Kevon Looney and Trayce Jackson-Davis are competing for the role, while the versatile Kyle Anderson is considered an option for small-ball center duties. Meanwhile, Jonathan Kuminga and Andrew Wiggins are in contention for a frontcourt spot next to the likely stalwart, Draymond Green.

Key Players and Competition

Stephen Curry remains the one constant in Kerr’s plans, assured of his starting position as the point guard. Curry's leadership and shooting prowess are crucial as the team looks to integrate new faces. Curry expressed optimism about the available options, saying, "You've got a guy who's a connector and can put the ball on the floor, create like BP, and obviously me and BP started a couple times last year. You've got Buddy who can shoot, who spaces the floor, and is a veteran. We've got a lot of options."

In addition to Curry’s steady hand, Kerr emphasizes the need for the team to sustain its high volume of three-point shooting. "I want Wigs shooting six, seven 3s. I want Brandin, I want Moses, I want De'Anthony -- I want to be a high volume shooting team," Kerr asserted, underlining the strategic direction for the team.

Strategic Evaluation During Training Camp

As training camp progresses, Kerr is focused on evaluating player combinations to find the optimal balance between the starting lineup and the bench. "The starting lineup is going to have to be dependent not only on the first five fitting, but the second fitting as well. We've got a lot of work to do to figure out lineups. All the guys can do is compete, play their ass off," Kerr noted.

This process of strategic evaluation is not only a tactical challenge but also a potential opportunity for the Warriors to reinvent their identity. "This feels like a new beginning for us, whereas last year felt like an extension of who we already were. It gives us a chance to reinvent ourselves a little bit," Kerr said, reflecting a sense of renewal and potential for growth.

Embracing Competition

Kerr’s approach to the season is to turn uncertainty into a driving force through competition. "It's easier when you know your starting five and you know your first four guys off of the bench. Way easier as a coach knowing that. But we don't have that. So let's turn that into a positive and turn it into competition ... let's establish our identity out of that competition," Kerr stated.

The Warriors’ emphasis on competition and adaptability aims to forge a resilient team capable of navigating the challenges of the upcoming season. With a mix of veteran presence, young talent, and strategic flexibility, the Golden State Warriors are positioned to create a dynamic and formidable lineup as they chase success in the 2023-24 campaign.
