Derrick White: The Unexpected Journey Continues

Derrick White: The Unexpected Journey Continues

As Derrick White stood on the practice courts on Sunday, it marked the beginning of another unexpected chapter in his basketball journey. Arriving at 2:30 a.m. after a long flight from the U.S., White was called up to replace the injured Kawhi Leonard, a role he has readily embraced.

The call-up disrupted White's plans for a family vacation in Cabo, underscoring the unpredictable nature of his career. This latest chapter with Team USA evokes memories of 2019, when White made a similar leap from the Select Team to being a last-minute addition to the senior team for the World Cup in China. That year, he secured the final roster spot after higher-profile guards like De'Aaron Fox and Trae Young withdrew.

"It was crazy going from the Select Team to the World Cup team," White recalls. "I just think now I've just continued to get better and better and so feel much more comfortable. I feel (now) like I did back then, and I'm just excited to be here."

White, who was in his hometown of Parker, Colorado, conducting his annual basketball camp when he received the call, joins a Team USA roster that includes his Celtics teammates Jrue Holiday and Jayson Tatum. He also reunites with former team advisor Jeff Van Gundy, now an assistant with Team USA.

Adding to his roster of accolades, White recently agreed to a four-year, $126 million contract extension with the Boston Celtics. The Celtics' NBA title last month marked a pinnacle of a season noted for White's defensive versatility and high-impact plays. His championship experience and adaptability make him a valuable asset for Team USA.

"I haven't seen D-White since the parade, so excited to have him here. He'll bring some championship DNA to this team," said Jayson Tatum, highlighting the value White brings to the squad.

Forward Kevin Durant will miss Monday's exhibition game against Australia due to a rehabilitating strained calf. Coach Steve Kerr announced that Durant did not have contact at practice and focused on shooting drills and rehab work. In Durant's absence, White’s defensive prowess will be vital for Team USA as they prepare for the upcoming matches.

As Derrick White navigates this unexpected twist in his career, his focus remains on contributing to Team USA's quest for success. His journey is a testament to his resilience, adaptability, and continuous growth as a player.
