Milwaukee Brewers’ outfielder Christian Yelich is set to miss the remainder of the 2024 MLB season due to a season-ending back surgery scheduled for Friday. The announcement came on Thursday from Yelich and the Brewers, marking a significant blow to the team as they approach the final stretch of the season.
Persistent back issues have long troubled Yelich throughout his career, and this latest bout of lower back inflammation, which began in July, has ultimately led to the decision for surgery. Yelich last played on July 23, and his absence since then has been palpable. The procedure will be performed by Dr. Brandon Rebholz.
"After careful consideration and consultation with medical personnel, I have decided to undergo season-ending back surgery," Yelich said in his statement. "I ultimately felt it was in the best interest of myself and the Brewers to have the surgery with the expectation of being back at 100% for next season."
Before his injury, Yelich was enjoying an impressive bounce-back season. Over 73 games, he amassed a .315/.406/.504 slash line with 11 home runs, 21 stolen bases, and a 152 OPS+. His resurgence was a key component in the Brewers' offensive lineup, and his absence leaves a notable gap.
Despite the setback, the Brewers have managed an 11-9 record without Yelich and currently hold a firm grip on the NL Central with a 69-52 overall standing, boasting the largest division lead in baseball with a nine-game cushion.
Challenges and Roster Adjustments
The Brewers attempted to secure a left-handed hitter to replace Yelich before the July 30 trade deadline but were unsuccessful. The team's regular lineup includes several left-handed hitters such as Jake Bauers, Tyler Black, Sal Frelick, Garrett Mitchell, and Brice Turang. These players will need to step up to fill the void left by Yelich's absence.
Even with Yelich out, the Brewers' deep roster and current standings suggest they have the capability to tackle the challenge. Yelich acknowledged the strength of his team, expressing confidence in his teammates, saying, "We have a very special team here and it will be disappointing not to be able to contribute on the field down the stretch. However, I have the utmost confidence in my teammates and will be cheering them on with all of you, the great fans of Milwaukee."
Looking Back at Yelich's Contract
This year marks the fifth of the nine-year, $215 million contract extension Yelich signed in March 2020. He stands to earn $26 million annually from 2025 to 2028, with a $20 million mutual option for 2029. Yelich’s long-term agreement reflects the Brewers’ commitment to him, despite his history of back problems and current defensive metrics, which grade him out as below average at this point in his career.
Optimism for the Future
Yelich’s decision to undergo surgery now comes with the hope of a full recovery and being back to 100% for the next season. This proactive approach might be the best course for both his career longevity and the Brewers' future success. Yelich took the opportunity to thank the fans for their unwavering support, stating, "Thank you for all your support. Go Brewers!"
The Brewers will surely miss Yelich's contributions on the field as they look to secure their stronghold in the NL Central and make a deep postseason run. However, with a resilient team and the promise of Yelich's return next season, there is a cautious optimism that the Brewers will continue to thrive.
